The introduction provides an overview of some strategies, policies, events and other factors which contributed to Australia declaring war on Japan on 8 December 1941. Notably, this was Australia’s first ever declaration of war, independent of Great Britain.

The battle for Singapore between the Allied and the Japanese forces occurred in 1942. This interactive map visualises and animates data about the positions of these forces – the Allied defenders were swiftly forced back in amphibious waves of battle.
